Incubating Chicken Eggs. Part 3

01/16/2014 by Katie

Tonight marks day 14 of incubating chickens eggs.  If your new to this series check out part one and part two.  This is the most exciting time to candle, especially if you have kids around,  it’s so magical to watch the baby chicks move around inside of the egg.

Day 14, good growth, active movement. Adequate air cell and moisture loss
Deceased embryo, visible blood ring

The embryo is well-developed, taking up 3/4 of the egg. If you were to break open the egg today, you would see a well formed feathered chick with toes and claws. From now on the egg will continue to get darker and it will be harder to see the baby.

In just four days I will be putting the eggs into what is called “lockdown” and I will candle them for the very last time.

And one week from today marks hatch day!!

Stay tuned for part three, lockdown.

In case you missed it… Check out part one, incubating chicks.

The way I read this, you lock down with 3 days left. My Brinsea instructions have me do this with 2 days left. I have only 4 days left so I’m concerned. This is my first hatch. I hope to succeed.

Yes , lock down on day 18. Hatch on day 21. However there has been times when I have forgotten to lockdown on 18 and it was all fine in the end. The 3 days gives the chicks time to settle into a hatching position..

WELCOME TO THE FARM

Hi, I’m Katie. Our family lives on our fourth generation family farm here in beautiful Idaho. We milk jersey cows, raise pastured heritage pigs and poultry, scottish highlanders for beef and a few sheep for fiber.  Our journey is about healing the body through sustainable agriculture.  After being diagnosed with a autoimmune disease several years ago, I saw a need to change the way we think about diseases in today’s modern world.

Our farm prides ourselves on selling the best meat and dairy possibly.  We do not use ANY gmo’s, corn or soy in our animal feed.  Our critters graze on fresh green pasture and are fed a locally grown, locally milled grain ration.

We are not offering farm direct pickups or tours at this time.

Our dairy and egg products are available at Pilgrims Market in CDA Idaho.  We do not ship raw dairy.

Grassfed Beef, lamb and pastured pork are available by the half or whole.
