Homemade Healing Toothpaste

08/13/2014 by Katie

Lets talk toothpaste, shall we!.  Boring? NO!  Come on, lets face it,  we all use it and we all need it.  The problem is, that commercial toothpaste is loaded with toxins and carcinogenics.  Why would I use something like that? Specifically the Laurel Sulfate!  Have you heard of it?   I hadn’t until after my 26th lupus related canker sore and my 2 dozenth trip to the Rheumatologist in a 6 month period and my doctor told me my body was having allergic reaction to the Laurel Sulfate.  My hunt was on for a Laurel Sulfate free toothpaste. Are you kidding? That crap is in every tube! I’ve looked at more toothpaste labels in the past 3 years then I have actually brushed my teeth.. ok that a lie, but you get the point.   Then it hit me.. why buy something, when you can make it yourself.  Isn’t making everything homemade my gig anyways?

My Healing Toothpaste recipe can be made for just pennies and the Pure Essential Oils give this toothpaste anti-cavity and antibacterial properties.    Along with peppermint for sparkling minty breath,  this healing toothpaste will make your mouth kissable fresh!

I chose all of the ingredients based on certain properties..

I use COCONUT OIL as a base for this, if you don’t know the  benefits of coconut oil, read this.. http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/13-evidence-based-medicinal-properties-coconut-oil .  I don’t oil pull, this is the next best thing.

BAKING SODA.. Stain remover, teeth whitener

MRYHH.. anti-infectious, anti-septic, astringent

THIEVES.. anti-viral, anti-septic, hands down best antibacterial oil in the world, (in my opinion, of course)

PEPPERMINT.. antiseptic, invigorating

**FENNEL.. anti-toxin, helps elevated and prevent mouth ulcers

*note about squeezable tubes,, if you find that the toothpaste is too hard to squeeze out, repeat step 1 and add in 2 tablespoons more of water. You can buy them HERE.

Hi there! I just made this yesterday, and we tried it last night, but it was terribly salty… I almost couldn’t make it through brushing. Is that normal? I followed your directions exactly, so I didn’t know if the brand of baking soda might make a difference? Thanks!

      Hi Kristy,
You could try adding a few more drops of Peppermint. Make sure your peppermint is Pure essential oils, as I’ve noticed that food/cake flavoring peppermint does’t pack the same punch. As far as the salty baking soda, yes, in nature, baking soda is terrible salty but is also so incredibly beneficial, it is not like typical toothpaste that most people are used to and does take awhile to get used to the saltiness but once you do, your teeth and gums will thank you. 🙂

After using homemade toothpaste for a while, it’s amazing how ‘sweet’ store toothpaste tastes with the artificial sweetener in them. Adding a bit of xylitol (which is also very beneficial to teeth) can also cut the salty taste a bit. It took us a few days but all my kids willingly use homemade toothpaste too.

Can I add the charcoal to this for added whitening benefit?

WELCOME TO THE FARM

Hi, I’m Katie. Our family lives on our fourth generation family farm here in beautiful Idaho. We milk jersey cows, raise pastured heritage pigs and poultry, scottish highlanders for beef and a few sheep for fiber.  Our journey is about healing the body through sustainable agriculture.  After being diagnosed with a autoimmune disease several years ago, I saw a need to change the way we think about diseases in today’s modern world.

Our farm prides ourselves on selling the best meat and dairy possibly.  We do not use ANY gmo’s, corn or soy in our animal feed.  Our critters graze on fresh green pasture and are fed a locally grown, locally milled grain ration.

We are not offering farm direct pickups or tours at this time.

Our dairy and egg products are available at Pilgrims Market in CDA Idaho.  We do not ship raw dairy.

Grassfed Beef, lamb and pastured pork are available by the half or whole.
