About Katie

I’m a fourth-generation farmer, homesteader, and writer living in North Idaho. My family and I raise livestock and steward our land using practical, regenerative practices rooted in responsible animal husbandry and long-term care of the soil.

Flour Sack Wisdom is where I share the traditional skills, kitchen knowledge, and homestead lessons that have been passed down through generations and learned through everyday life on the farm.

The Skills Worth Passing Down

I grew up around agriculture and have spent much of my life learning the rhythms of livestock, gardens, kitchens, and seasons. Over time, I began to realize that many of the skills once common in rural homes—scratch cooking, preserving food, caring for animals, and managing a household with intention—are slowly being lost.

Flour Sack Wisdom was created to preserve and share those skills.

My husband and I have known each other since childhood, and together we are raising our family in many of the same traditions that shaped our own upbringing. Much of my time is spent homeschooling our four children and working alongside them in the kitchen, garden, and barnyard as we learn and practice these skills together.

I am also the co-founder of the Modern Homesteading Conference, where we bring together farmers, educators, and families who share a desire to learn practical skills and build more capable, self-reliant homes.

Whether around our kitchen table, in the barnyard, or at the conference, my hope is to help keep these practical skills alive for the next generation.

FAQ

Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned didn’t come from books or classes, but from watching the generations before me. I was taught that a good home is built in the everyday things—shared meals, steady work, caring for what you’ve been given, and taking the time to teach those skills to the next generation.
