Importance of A2A2 Milk
Lets talk the difference between A1 and A2 milk. In the beginning of my health journey, I knew we needed to go back to farm fresh raw milk. What I didn’t know, is that there is a difference in raw milks. Specifically, genetics in the milk that can either hinder your health or promote your health.
The culprit? A mutated amino acid chain. Years ago, through domestication and hybridization, a genetic mutation occurred at the 67th protein in the chain. Forming a ‘new’ amino acid called Histidine, (a lactase) while A2 has a Proline (an enzyme). While this may seem like a small mutation, the human body processes the two very differently. When the body tries to breakdown the A1, it creates a protein fragment called BCM7, or beta-casomorphin 7. It is this fragment that is to blame. The BCM7 is believed to cause digestive issues, “lactose intolerance”, diabetes, autism, mental disorders and autoimmune diseases.

A New Zealand Professor, Bob Elliot, founded the following.. during a study between two groups of 250 mice, one group fed A1 milk and the other fed A2 milk, Elliot found that 47% of the mice fed A1 milk had Type 1 Diabetes, where-as NONE of the mice fed A2 milk got diabetes. 47%!
A second study showed rabbits fed A1 beta casein developed arterial plaque, where the A2 rabbits did not.
So what happens when BCM-7 passes through the gut (stomach and intestines)? Where some healthy individual have zero issues processing A1 peptides, those that suffer from autoimmune issues (MS, eczema, Parkinsons, celiac, and crohn’s, to name a few) or leaky gut and/or infants, can absorb BCM-7 through the gut wall. Once BCM-7 is in the bloodstream, it passes through the blood/brain barrier, attaching to the opioid receptor. This is where there is evidence of A1 milk fed rats exhibiting behavioral symptoms similar to autism and schizophrenia.

When a human suffers from “lactose Intolerance” their doctor tells them to switch to goats milk, as it is easier to digest.. why? Because goat milk (and Yak’s milk) is naturally A2, as is human breast milk. So why are we still consuming A1?
Why is A1 milk still on the market?
In 1995, a New Zealand company patented & trademarked the name “A2”. Using the phrase “A2” is considered intellectual property. Meaning, producers with genetic proof of holding the A2 gene, can be sued for trademark infringement if they advertise it as so. The company’s most recent patent rights will not expire until 2036 .

This keeps a lot of producer afraid to advertise their bovine genetics. Some get around this by saying they are ‘A1 negative’ or A2A2, meaning both Sire and Dam are positive to hold the A2 – A2 beta casein genetics.
Rarely do I encourage people to “google it”. But today I am. Do your self and your family a healthy favor and google the effects of A1 milk. Dr. Mercola has an excellent articles, as do several others.

Where to buy A2A2 milk?
There are roughly 920 different breeds of cattle on the planet. Six of those breeds are predominantly known to still carry the original A2 genetics. Brown Swiss, Milking Shorthorn, Guernsey, Jersey, Friesian-Holstein and the Ayrshire. I highly recommend when shopping for milk, you go meet your farmer and ask them what type of genetics their cows carry. Believe me, if they have A2 genetics on the farm, they will know it!
Here on our farm all of our milkers are certified by U C Davis to hold the A2A2 Beta Casein genotype. Our farm fresh raw milk is sold by the half gallon in custom glass dairy jars. Raw milk, raw cream, kefir, raw butter and eggs are sold exclusively at Pilgrims Market in CDA Idaho.
